Open Interest Explained

TL;DR. Open interest (OI) is the total number of active futures contracts that have not been settled. Rising OI alongside rising price means new longs are entering — conviction. Falling OI alongside rising price means shorts are closing — less conviction. OI is the "how many people are in this trade" number.
